Project Social Impact Assessment
Year 2025
CHALLENGE
School of Rock operates over 410 locations worldwide, teaching music to more than 70,000 students through a performance-based curriculum, making it the world’s largest music education franchise. But beyond music proficiency, how does School of Rock support emotional growth, wellbeing, and long-term social value?
In 2025, School of Rock commissioned Sound Diplomacy to assess the impact of its music programme to students, families and instructors across the United States.
With a deep belief that music can transform lives, the organisation sought evidence to support its impact, identify areas for growth, and strengthen its message to communities and stakeholders.
strategy
Sound Diplomacy designed a multi-layered approach to capture the full impact of School of Rock’s model. This included:
A comprehensive literature review examining the developmental benefits of music education
A workshop with company members to define a bespoke impact framework
Surveys sent to students, alumni, parents, instructors, staff and franchise owners, with over 2,500 responses collected in two weeks
Follow-up interviews with managers and educators who had experienced School of Rock as students themselves
The survey was framed around key indicators such as confidence, academic engagement, emotional wellbeing, teamwork, leadership, and sense of belonging. Both quantitative data and open-ended reflections were analysed to measure School of Rock’s perceived and measurable social impact.
Using the 2,500 responses gathered from surveys and interviews with students, parents, alumni, staff, and franchise owners, our team analysed the data through a longitudinal lens to track impact over time. The methodology included:
Cohort segmentation to assess impact by length of enrolment
Thematic analysis across key dimensions such as happiness, learning, and belonging
Staff and franchisee perspectives to understand operational and community impact
The report was built around lived experiences, placing emotional and social value at the centre of the assessment.
