Project abba voyage impact report
Year 2022-2024
CHALLENGE
ABBA, one of the world’s most iconic musical groups, have long been a pinnacle of global pop culture. As one of the best selling bands of all time with a multi-generational fanbase, their legacy extends into film, theatre, and tourism. In May 2022 ABBA Voyage was launched. The innovative concert features digital avatars of ABBA performing alongside a 10-piece live band at the ABBA Arena - a purpose-built venue in Pudding Mill Lane, east London.
The concert creates a cutting-edge, immersive live experience which has helped to drive cultural tourism and boost the local economy, having been globally celebrated as a landmark event in music and entertainment. Sound Diplomacy worked in year 1 with social value partners RealWorth, and in year 2 sustainability partners A Greener Future to measure the full economic, social value and sustainability impact of this venture.
strategy
Sound Diplomacy was commissioned to conduct a comprehensive impact assessment of all of ABBA Voyage’s activities and one-off impact of construction. Focusing on three geographic areas: the local area (London boroughs of Newham, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest); London as a whole; and the UK, the evaluation looked at the impact since May 2022 on audiences, workers, and economies. Our approach included:
Economic Impact Analysis
Examining direct, indirect and induced contributions, including job creation, venue operations, ticket sales, spending patterns inside and outside of the Arena (including on transport, other attractions, retail, merchandise, etc.) and local business activity.Social Value Assessment
