Huntsville Music Audit demonstrates the long-term impact of strategic investment in music

Eight years ago, Sound Diplomacy partnered with the City of Huntsville, Alabama, to answer an ambitious question: what role could music play in shaping the city's future?

Today, we have the evidence.

We're proud to share the release of the 2026 Huntsville Music Audit, developed in partnership with the Huntsville Music Office. More than a follow-up report, it tells the story of what can happen when a city commits to a long-term vision for music and sees it through.

In 2018, our first Music Audit mapped Huntsville's music ecosystem and set out a roadmap of 47 recommendations. Those recommendations weren't designed to sit on a shelf. They were created to help the city strengthen its music ecosystem, attract talent, support local artists and businesses, and embed music within its wider economic future.

Eight years later, the results speak for themselves.

The latest audit shows that Huntsville's music ecosystem now supports 3,047 jobs, generates $278.2 million in economic output, and accounts for 2.8% of all city employment. Since 2018, the city's music economy has more than doubled, while music assets have continued to grow across venues, festivals, businesses and community infrastructure.

Behind those figures is a remarkable story of implementation.

The city established the Huntsville Music Office, appointed its first Music Officer, invested in world-class infrastructure including the Orion Amphitheater, expanded festivals and music programmes, strengthened support for artists, and has now delivered more than half of the original strategy's recommendations. The result is a music ecosystem that is larger, stronger and more resilient than it was eight years ago.

For Sound Diplomacy, projects like Huntsville represent the reason we exist.

We've always believed that music is more than culture. When cities invest in music strategically, they create jobs, attract talent, strengthen identity and improve quality of life. Huntsville is one of the clearest demonstrations we've seen of that belief becoming reality.

The success of this project belongs first and foremost to the city's leadership, the Huntsville Music Office, local partners and the music community, whose commitment turned a long-term strategy into lasting change. It's been a privilege to support that journey and to continue working alongside the city as its music ecosystem evolves.

As more places around the world look to harness the power of music, Huntsville offers something invaluable: proof that long-term investment, collaboration and implementation deliver measurable results.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing more from the Huntsville journey, exploring the ideas, partnerships and milestones behind one of the most significant music ecosystem transformations we've had the privilege to support.
