Belfast

Music Strategy and Recovery Plan

Sound Diplomacy is proud to have developed an analysis of the Belfast music ecosystem; exploring how best to support its evolution and recovery from COVID-19, and its application to become a UNESCO City of Music.

Our Work

  • We brought together key stakeholders across the community, UNESCO City of Music Steering Committee and Belfast City Council, to determine and agree on key objectives, timescales, deliverables and outcomes.

  • We delivered an extensive literature review of available regulations, ordinances and policies related to music in Belfast. This was followed by extensive sectoral engagement work, including a survey, interviews and roundtable discussions. During this phase, we supported the creation of a cultural infrastructure mapping.

  • We established the direct, indirect and induced economic value of the music ecosystem in Belfast, including calculating the percentage of jobs in the music ecosystem compared to the wider economy, and the growth or contraction of music over the past decade.

  • All findings were presented in a report that will serve as the blueprint for moving forward to grow Belfast’s music sector.
